How to Become a Primary School Teacher?

The mastery of national education teacher competitions has profoundly transformed the pathways to these professions, preventing the registration of a large number of candidates and thus contributing to the teacher shortage in recent years. However, there are pathways to participate in the competitions and become a teacher without a diploma.

Become a teacher without a diploma with the third competition

There is a little-known possibility to become a teacher without a diploma: third pathway competitions, which can be registered without a diploma or age limit. They only concern a small number of positions within the external competition. But they represent an opportunity for candidates whose qualifications do not reach the master’s level and who already have professional experience.

Access conditions for the third competition

First of all, on the date of the first eligibility test, you must meet the general registration conditions for all teacher competitions:

  • Hold French nationality or be a national of another member state of the European Union or party to the agreement on the European Economic Area, Andorra, or Switzerland.
  • Enjoy your civil rights.
  • Not have been declared incompatible with the exercise of your duties.
  • Be in regular position concerning national service obligations.
  • Justify the required physical condition requirements.

And if no qualification or diploma is required, there must be proof of one or more professional activities carried out under private legal contracts. Professional activities carried out as civil servants, magistrates, military officers, public agents, and librarians in private educational institutions cannot be counted towards the duration of professional training activities. All other paid professional activities are taken into account.

You must have engaged in these professional activities for at least 5 years. Note that the reference date for calculating the duration is not the date of your participation in the competition, but the date of publication of the eligibility test results for this competition.

Diploma exemption in teacher competitions

For all national education teacher competitions, both in the public and private sectors, you are exempt from a diploma:

  • if you are a mother or father of three children or more
  • or if you are recognized as a “high-level athlete”.

In other words, by fulfilling one of these conditions, you can participate in the competitions without having a master’s degree or diploma. But this exemption will not spare you from the competition tests, where competition is tough…

Note: for certain competitions (CAPEPS in particular), all candidates must possess:

  • a certificate attesting that you have completed a course of at least 50 meters in a pool under the responsibility of a public service (…) ;
  • “a certificate attesting your qualification in first aid recognized as at least equal to that of the teaching unit ‘Civic Prevention and Relief Level 1’ (PSC1) by the Ministry of the Interior (Civil Security). Applicants holding an AFPS are not required to justify the CFP 1.
